Puzzling Rosy Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Shoreline Spurs Fears of Likely Algal Bloom
Authorities in Tasmania are striving to determine a rosy sludge that has materialized on a secluded beach, with some scientists worried it could be an algae outbreak.
Extensive Occurrence On Shore
The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a stretch of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A like substance has also been documented on parts of another local beach and a separate bay.
Specimens Gathered for Analysis
Specimens have been gathered and sent to the environmental agency for examination. A representative commented that "algal blooms are a natural event in response to changes in food sources, heat, rain or illumination".
"These blooms are sometimes called reddish tides because the blooms can change the water crimson," the official noted. "Not all algal blooms are dangerous, with numerous types acting as a major source of food for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of crimson tides in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."
Growing Frequency Connected to Environmental Shifts
Algal blooms are natural events but their frequency has increased in recent times, in part due to climate change and environmental waste that join together to create food-loaded oceans ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that usually act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a bloom, there is a rapid growth in their numbers that disrupts the normal functioning of marine environments.
These occurrences have been equated with underwater bushfires and can persist in growing as long as conditions are ripe. In more extreme scenarios, vulnerable aquatic environments can be wiped out as aquatic animals is killed or deprived of oxygen, offering more minerals for the bloom.
Recent Severe Event in South Australia
A southern state in the past dealt with a severe phytoplankton proliferation along its southern shore after a succession of marine heatwaves, which extended across a vast area. The bloom resulted in beachgoers with eye irritation and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to 250,000 marine animals across hundreds of species, according to agency assessments.
Specialist Analysis on the Local Event
Faith Coleman, who assisted in examining the start of the previous event said, based on pictures of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".
"There are lots of these blooms around the island of late," she said.
Coleman explained sea sparkle did not produce poisons similar to the type involved in the previous devastating event, but it does consume small invertebrates and "lots of fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.
"It's common to observe a bloom of sea sparkle after a outbreak of a different species, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.
Demands for Investigation and Public Safety
A marine scientist, who took samples of the rosy slime in the state, stated it appeared the potential proliferation had "grown significantly" and proposed the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, referring to similar cases overseas.
"So Tasmania needs to send a clear message here, the government and the regulators need to act to this. We need to study the specimens we've taken and we need to notify the public here," she emphasized.
The scientist stated she had concerns for community health after feeling a numbness along her limbs and skin while being exposed with tainted seawater.
Reports of Dead Sea Creatures and Demands for Government Response
An advocacy organization has documented lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a veteran activist labeling the event as an "environmental emergency" and urging the local leader to see and "lead the response that officials must be undertaking".
"He needs to realize this is a disaster in the making, financially as well as environmentally."
Government Reaction
Addressing the media, the premier said he was did not know of any links between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was needed before judgments could be reached.
"We need to ensure our rivers and seas are ecologically sound and viable," he said.
"Numerous shorelines across the state are our resources and we need to make sure the public and our industry can operate side-by-side to utilize our aquatic resources efficiently and sustainably."
